Microsoft Site License
Our departments subscribe to the Site Licensed option through TAMU. This allows us to have access to the latest versions of major Microsoft products and install on an unlimited number of university owned computers.
The licensing for this service is based on a Microsoft Key Management Server (KMS) which is housed at the university. As soon as a computer is connected to the TAMU network it will see the KMS and auto-activate. This process needs to happen every 180 days. If the computer has not been able to reestablish communication to the KMS after 180 days, the computer will become unlicensed. It starts a 30-day grace period and notifies the user of this change. If the computer is not activated after the 30-day grace period expires, it will enter a reduced functionality mode.
If you have a computer that is kept outside TAMU then you will need to bring it to campus every 180 days or connect to the VPN so the licensing can update correctly. The VPN client comes installed on new computers but if it is not installed see the instructions to install and connect: https://tamu.service-now.com/tamu-selfservice/knowledge_detail.do?sysparm_document_key=kb_knowledge,02ce68792badc6009b4c26e405da151e
